The Diplomat: ‘EU Parliament Voices Support for Myanmar’s Opposition Government’
On 11 October, the Diplomat reported that the European Parliament passed a resolution on 7 October condemning the human rights violations that amount to crimes against humanity committed by Tatmadaw against the people in Myanmar. The resolution calls on the Council to continue to impose targeted sanctions against those responsible for the coup of February 2021 and to consider other possible measures. The Financial Times: ‘UN warns of Myanmar aid shortfall as country faces ‘triple crises’’
On 10 October, the Financial Times reported that the UN faces a serious shortfall in donor funding for Myanmar amidst the continuing military coup, an economic crisis, and Covid-19. According to Andrew Kirkwood, the UN’s resident co-ordinator in Myanmar, the world body had as of October 6 raised less than half of its $385m emergency humanitarian appeal for Myanmar, where a deepening civil conflict has been overshadowed in recent months by the crisis in Afghanistan.

Dhaka Tribune: ‘UN signs deal with Bangladesh to help Rohingyas in Bhasan Char’
On 9 October, the Dhaka Tribune reported that the Bangladesh government and the United Nations have signed a formal humanitarian document to support the Rohingyas. The State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr. M Enamur Rahman said around 80,000 Rohingyas will be relocated to Bhasan Char from Cox’s Bazar camps within the next three months.

OHCHR: ‘Alarming reports indicating a large-scale offensive by the Myanmar military’
On 8 October, the Office of the Human Rights Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) issued its press briefing concerning the alarming reports indicating a large-scale offensive by the Myanmar military in the coming days. It noted ‘alarming reports indicate that there has been the substantial deployment of heavy weapons and troops by the Myanmar military, the Tatmadaw, over the past few weeks’.

The Hill: ‘In the wake of Burma's coup, new US legislation offers a roadmap for action’
On 6 October, the Hill reported that Mr. Gregory W. Meeks, Mr. Steve Chabot, and Senator Benjamin L. Cardin introduced the “Burma Unified through Rigorous Military Accountability Act of 2021” or BURMA Act in the US Congress. The legislation condemns the actions taken by the Burmese military during its February 1 coup d’état and its aftermath and calls for targeted sanctions, offers support for civil society and humanitarian assistance, and calls on the State Department to issue a genocide determination for the persecution of the Rohingya.
