Two men described as Myanmar army deserters told authorities in Bangladesh that they were ordered by superior officers to kill Rohingya civilians during security operations in 2017. Paul Reichler, partner at US law firm Foley Hoag LLP that leads the legal team in the case against Myanmar before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) stated that he would present statements made by the men to the ICJ as additional evidence to support the claim that the military acted with genocidal intent. Dr. Priya Pillai, Head of Asia Justice Coalition’s Secretariat, commented on the statements: ‘the devil is in the details […] It’s going to be about what information they’re providing, how relevant it is, and how truthful it is...Specifically where it concerns the internal higher-command structure, orders coming from above, that’s really where this could be quite important’.
