Legal Advocacy and Communications Intern

The Asia Justice Coalition (AJC or the Coalition) is a network of organizations whose purpose is to promote justice and accountability for gross violations of international human rights law and serious violations of international humanitarian law, in Myanmar and subsequently in Asia, and to contribute to the fulfilment of the rights of victims and their families.


Since 2021, the Coalition has been driving and advocating for a global convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes Against Humanity (CAH). As the sole Asia-based and focused organisation actively involved in the CAH deliberation process, AJC plays a central role in bridging the gap between the global and the regional levels. Through its efforts, AJC has successfully published briefing papers, organised webinars and side events, conducted diplomatic briefings and workshops, ensuring that the CAH process is not limited within the halls of the UN but remains inclusive, keeping all stakeholders – States, CSOs, and victims and survivor groups – informed and involved.


To assist in effective legal advocacy, communication, and outreach of the Coalition, the AJC seeks one (1) advocacy and communications intern for an eight-week (8) internship.


Duties:

  • Undertake directed legal research on the Draft Articles on Crimes Against Humanity.

  • Assist in the preparation of legal primers and backgrounders on the CAH process.

  • Assist in the conception and logistical organisation of regional consultations, includingrecording meeting notes.

  • Prepare and promote advocacy and outreach materials, especially aligning with the CAHProject.

  • Design and actively contribute to campaign and communication strategies and outputs.

  • Assist in managing AJC’s external communications, including website and social mediaplatforms and monthly newsletters.

  • Support the organisation of events, including webinars, workshops, and logistics.

  • Perform any other duty relevant to the position as determined by the supervisor.


Position Expectation:

The successful candidate would be expected to commit 12 hours per week. Working hours would be flexible unless stated otherwise. The candidate would be expected to meet (online) the supervisor at least once a week and maintain continuous contact throughout the period of the internship.


Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in or a postgraduate student in law, with specialization in international law, human rights or a related field.

  • Demonstrated interest in international justice, atrocity prevention, and human rights, including a deep understanding of the Asia-Pacific region.

  • Strong familiarity with graphic design (like Adobe Photoshop, Canva, etc) and online video editing software.

  • Previous experience in conducting targeted research and analysis, preparing advocacy and outreach materials, and managing social media.

  • Excellent written and oral communication in English.

  • Excellent time-management, multi-task, prioritisation, interpersonal, andorganisational skills.

  • Strong ability to maintain confidentiality and understand the sensitivity of the work of theCoalition.

  • Ability to work independently and within the constraints of tight deadlines.
