Environmental Litigation and Core International Crimes Case Identification Workshop

The Asia Justice Coalition is seeking expressions of interest from Asia-Pacific academics and practitioners with experience in environmental and climate change strategic litigation to engage in a workshop examining the intersection of environmental destruction and core international crimes. This includes individuals who have litigated, prosecuted, or published in these areas.
Over the course of 3 days (3 hours per day online), participants will actively strategize in small groups to use knowledge of domestic and comparative environmental litigation to apply to a hypothetical fact pattern that includes elements of core international crimes. The purpose of the workshop is to collectively brainstorm practical domestic causes of action and litigation strategies addressing the hypothetical scenarios. Participants will gain exposure to core international crimes frameworks and have opportunities to connect with practitioners across the region.
Participation is voluntary and unpaid.
Application Deadline
Candidates wishing to express interest in participating are asked to complete this form, including uploading a current CV by 31 August 2026 (Monday, 17:00 Bangkok Time). The selected participants will be formally notified by the end of September 2026.

Workshop Structure
The workshop will be conducted online. Participants will be assigned to groups and provided with a hypothetical case approximately one month prior to the workshop.
The workshop consists of three sessions over three days:
Day One (3 hours):
Plenary discussions drawing on participants’ expertise. This session will include:
Discussion of general principles in environmental litigation
Background on international criminal law and core international crimes
Further explanation of the given hypothetical facts.
Day Two (3 hours):
Participants will work in assigned groups to develop a legal strategy based on a given set of hypothetical facts.
Day Three (3 hours):
Groups will present their strategies and provide commentary on other groups’ presentations.
Certification and Follow-Up
Participants who:
Attend and actively engage in all three sessions, and
Contribute as per the workshop participation guidelines
will receive a Certificate of Participation. They may also be invited to contribute to an AJC publication, if willing and able.
Time Commitment
Nine hours of online sessions over one week; and
Additional pre-reading and/or group coordination as needed
Selection Criteria
Domestic or comparative expertise in litigation, legal research or policy in the Asia-Pacific (inclusive of Central, South, Southeast, East Asia and the Pacific) relating to environmental harm (e.g. regulatory compliance, negligence, other causes of action) and climate change;
Ability to commit to all three discussion sessions; and
Current location and area of practice is in the Asia-Pacific.
Please note: This workshop does not require expertise in international criminal law; instead, expertise in domestic legislation and causes of action is preferred.
Nevertheless, experts in international environmental crimes are encouraged to express interest as discussants during the first and third session.
A limited number of places may be available for colleagues who have relevant experience but are unable to commit to the full three sessions required.
Active participation is necessary. Participants in the case identification workshop will be expected to contribute meaningfully to discussions and group work.
Important Information
This workshop is a structured brainstorming exercise designed to foster cross-jurisdictional and interdisciplinary collaboration. AJC does not engage in litigation.
All sessions will be conducted in English. Unfortunately, simultaneous interpretation is not available.
